The mysterious case of a 63 yo woman with shortness of breath and a history of bioprosthetic heart valves. This presentation describes the case history of a woman with bioprosthetic valves who came in for a repeat valve replacement surgery after development of progressive mitral stenosis and heart failure.

This case presents an uncommon presentation of a disease that is common in certain regions. Elements of the patient's social history help guide the appropriate testing that helped lead to diagnosis. It emphasizes how certain conditions can present with unusual symptoms, and a patient's lifestyle can provide clues to guide selection of diagnostic testing.

A 10-month-old presents after tick exposure with fever, conjunctivitis, oral lesions, rash, and meningismus. This presentation provides a discussion of the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment of the ultimate diagnosis.

Dr. Alison Hixon, MD PhD Dr. Hixon grew up in Montana, where she spent her time pushing her boundaries rock climbing, backpacking, and long-distance cycling. A late comer to science and medicine, she stumbled her way into a research lab one summer and never looked back. She graduated from the University of Colorado MSTP in 2021, and then did residency in Internal Medicine at WashU. She is now a 1st year fellow in ID at WashU. She still enjoys all things nature and does her best not to get too many tick-borne illnesses. |

Dr. Deesha Bhojwani, MD Dr. Bhojwani is a first year infectious disease fellow at University of Missouri Columbia. She has a deep interest, passion and commitment to the field of Infectious diseases and is drawn towards the constant learning opportunity offered by a wide variety of cases in ID. Outside of medicine, she enjoys traveling, exploring different genres of music, and dancing. |

Dr. Nisma Javed, MD Nisma grew up in Lahore, Pakistan, before moving to the United States. She earned her medical degree from Services Institute of Medical Sciences in 2015 and joined our fellowship in July of 2024. During her residency training, she became interested in infectious diseases; she found the process of learning about and delving into the origins of these diseases to be fascinating. Furthermore, ID is a constantly changing and evolving environment that presents us with difficult situations, to which we find new ways of adapting. In the field of microbial pathogens, she enjoys taking on the role of the intrepid investigator and treating them. Outside of ID, she loves reading, cooking, and traveling to new places. |

Dr. Salvador Fernandez, MD Dr. Fernandez is a second-year Infectious Disease Fellow at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine with additional interests in medical education and health care policy. His current work is focused on optimizing the quality of ID training for non-ID learners, with an additional project on the epidemiology of Invasive pneumococcal disease |

Dr. Kelsey Rowe, MD MBA Dr. Kelsey Rowe MD, MBA is a second year Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellow at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. She completed her pediatric residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 2023 and graduated from Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 2020. Her areas of research and career interests include hospital epidemiology, quality improvement, patient safety, high value care initiatives, and sustainability in medicine. |

This course is directed to infectious diseases physicians, pediatricians, public health specialists, infection control specialists, epidemiologists, and those who oversee infection control programs. Fellows are always welcome at no charge.
