Presentation Overview

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health challenge that is making many bacterial infections increasingly difficult to treat with antibiotics. As resistance continues to rise, there is an urgent need for new approaches to fighting these infections. This presentation will provide an overview of the growing threat of AMR and its impact on healthcare around the world. It will introduce bacteriophages (phages)—viruses that naturally target and kill bacteria—and explore their potential as a new tool for treating antibiotic-resistant infections. The session will discuss the key challenges that must be overcome before phage therapy can become a widely available treatment, including the need for more clinical research, regulatory approval, and standardized approaches to care.

Dr. Robert T. Schooley, MD
Distinguished Professor 
University of California San Diego
Dr. Schooley is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine at University of California San Diego. His research efforts focus on the pathogenesis and therapy of RNA viruses. Following his successful use of bacteriophages to treat a multidrug resistant A. baumannii infection in a fellow UCSD faculty member in 2016, he became interested in the use of viruses as therapeutic agents for bacterial infections. He Co-Directs UCSD’s Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics (IPATH).

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Attendees will understand bacteriophage biology.
  • Attendees will learn about the use of bacteriophages to address antimicrobial resistant bacterial infections.
  • Attendees will understand open issues in the clinical development of phage therapy.

Target Audience

This course is directed to infectious diseases physicians, pediatricians, public health specialists, infection control specialists, epidemiologists, and those who oversee infection control programs. Fellows are always welcome at no charge.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Missouri State Medical Association (MSMA) through the joint providership of the St. Louis STD/HIV Prevention Training Center and ID Society of St. Louis.  The St. Louis STD/HIV Prevention Training Center is accredited by the MSMA to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
